Any sailers? Thoughts on small sail boats, Catamarans.

Hi,

I’m not big of fishing and I do like water skiing but the gas gets really expensive real fast going over the water at high speeds with a large motor. I’m personally more of a river and canoe guy. So I’ve been thinking of sailing but I want at least a bit of speed. I was thinking something really small and easy to handle that me and my wife and son could go out for the day or evening or maybe even a weekend. We live on a really big shallow lake that gets some good wind. I was thinking of a regular style one but then was thinking of a cat, as far as I knew they were more of a hobby type and faster? I have seen plans for some that have a berth or 2 in the floats or hulls or what ever you call them. Anyways it looks like a blast and affordable, so is it?

Please help.
